SWING ETIQUETTE/CODE OF CONDUCT
University of Sheffield Swing Dance society is committed to providing a fun, safe and comfortable environment for all dancers at classes and socials.
Therefore, we kindly ask dancers to observe the following code of conduct:
1. No forms of harassment will be tolerated. Everyone of every sex, age, ability, appearance, nationality and dance experience should be treated equally.
2. No discriminatory language will be tolerated such as: sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or racist language (even if meant as a joke).
3. Everyone is allowed to ask anyone else to dance and everyone has the right to say no (politely!) with no further explanation necessary.
4. Please be respectful of other dancers: some may have different personal boundaries. Make sure it is okay to touch your partner by asking them first and only touch arms, hands, shoulders and backs.
5. On the dance floor, be aware of the people dancing around you. Leads look where you are sending your partner and follows be aware of where you are being sent, act if you sense a collision may occur. If you do bump into someone, apologise and make sure no one is hurt.
6. Aerial moves are not permitted on the social dance floor. Also, leads if you are going to attempt to dip your partner please check they are happy to be dipped first!
7. Before attending a dance event please be considerate of your dance partners and wash, use deodorant, and wear clean clothes. Bringing spare clothes and deodorant to a social may be a good idea too!
8. If you are dancing to a live band, please show your appreciation by clapping after each song.
9. If anyone upsets you, or hurts you, tell a committee member or trusted friend who can talk to someone for you.
